Final installment of my 2011 movie count!
(My goal was to see 365 movies this year, but that didn’t work out at all. Thanks, college. Anyway, I did manage 184, so I guess it’s alright. I’m going to aim for 365 in 2012 as well. I doubt that’ll happen, but we’ll see how it goes.)
178. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) | 3.5
- Not bad, but ultimately disappointing. As is the case with so many wonderfully casted films, none of these actors or characters were given enough time on screen to really shine or develop. Also, I suspect that having no knowledge of the source material put me at a serious disadvantage…this story is a complicated web of causes and effects that 127 minutes just wasn’t enough to explain. All that said, it was well-acted and well-designed. Oh, and the final scene is fabulous.
179. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) | 4
- I finally caved (and I’m so glad I did).
180. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 3 | 3.5
181. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980) | 3.75
182. The Brown Bunny (2003) | 4
- It’s slow and quiet and definitely not for everyone, but I personally thought it was beautiful and touching and daring and interesting and different and I liked it a lot.
183. The Beaver (2011) | 2.75
- Um. I guess it was…………………….okay? I don’t know. It’s basically the opposite of Brown Bunny: beyond the decidedly odd (i.e. ridiculous) premise, there really isn’t anything interesting or different about it at all.
184. Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983) | 4
168. Tokyo Story (1953) | 3.5
169. Chungking Express (1994) | 4.5
- SO, SO GOOD.
170. Before Sunrise (1995) | 3.5
171. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 1 | 3.5
172. Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011) | 2.5
- The extra .5 is only—and I do mean only—because Ryan Gosling looks fucking incredible in a suit. Airplane movies suck.
173. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) | 3
- Admittedly, not too quality. But I had fun watching it so.
- The costumes were quite good as well.
174. My Week with Marilyn (2011) | 4
- I had some minor issues with it, but Michelle was beautiful and amazing and so was the cinematography (particularly the lighting).
- In other news, Emma Watson is a horrible actress and Eddie Redmayne is precious.
- Oh, also, I felt weird seeing the whole thing in colour…I almost felt like it should have been in black & white? I can’t explain it. That probably wouldn’t have gone over very well, but I just had this feeling the whole time that that would have been really good.
175. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 2 | 3.5
176. Ethnic Notions (1986) | 3
- Informative.
177. Body and Soul (1925) | 3.5
- Clever, Micheaux. Very clever.
153. Sicko (2007) | 3
154. The Birth of a Nation (1915) | 4
- It was revolutionary in terms of the development of the medium, hence the rating. The discourses that it portrays/reinforces are a totally different story.
155. Our Hospitality (1923) | 4
- YES
156. Citizen Kane (1941) | 4.5-5
- I want to hang every frame on my wall.
157. Grand Illusion (1937) | 3.5
158. The Human Centipede (2009) | N/A
- HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAH
- on another note, for anyone who’s been considering watching it but isn’t sure they can handle it: it’s not that bad. they were very…tasteful (?) in terms of what they actually show (next to nothing). so unless the whole idea is what really bothers you (as opposed to the graphic representation), you’ll probably be fine.
159. Within Our Gates (1920) | 4
160. Sisters of the Gion (1936) | 3.5
161. Memento (2000) | 4
162. Immortals (2011) | 2
- :|
163. Trick ‘r Treat (2007) | 2
164. Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) | 2.5
165. Strike (1925) | 3.5
166. The Symbol of the Unconquered (1920) | 3
167. A Man Escaped (1956) | 4
this is pitiful.
150. The Ides of March (2011) | 3
151. North by Northwest (1959) | 4
152. Angst essen Seele auf (1974) | 3.5
148. Metropolitan (1990) | 3.5
149. Arthur (2011) | 2
142. Casino (1995) | 4
- Robert DeNiro’s suits are soooo awesome.
143. (Untitled) (2009) | 3
- What you did there. I see it.
144. Bullets Over Broadway (1994) | 3.5
John Cusack persists as my longest celebrity crush.
145. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2011) | 3.25
- Same flaws as most horror movies (i.e. stupid characters, predictability) and I suspect that a lot of serious horror fans won’t like it because it feels a little Disney and it’s not very scary. But I liked it. The magical aspect was pretty cool and very del Toro-y (definitely reminded me of Pan’s Labyrinth) and the little girl who plays the main character is quite good.
146. The Hour: Series 1 | 4
- Ben
- Whishaw’s
- Face
147. The Last Days of Disco (1998) | 4
- This is my kind of movie. Lots of dialogue, overtly sardonic, Chloë Sevigny, disco music, Robert Sean Leonard. Felt a lot like Kicking and Screaming (everyone is post-college, bourgeois, witty, and talkative) which I also loved.
137. Running with Scissors (2006) | 3
138. Sherlock Episode 1 | 5
139. Sherlock Episode 2 | 4.5
140. Sherlock Episode 3 | 5
141. The Godfather Part II (1974) | 4
(I’m counting each episode of Sherlock as a full movie because they’re 88 minutes long. That’s like an average Woody Allen movie, so.)
132. Dogma (1999) | 3.5
133. The Godfather (1972) | 4.5
134. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) | 4
135. Jules et Jim (1962) | 3.5
136. RuPaul’s Drag Race: Season 1 | 4*
129. Hesher* (2010) | 2
130. Mysterious Skin (2004) |3.5
131. Leaves of Grass (2009) | 3
*I actually saw Hesher a while ago, but I forgot to add it to my list.
